The body, like the mind and the soul, must be trained for spiritual combat. By denying the flesh in little things, Kephans are prepared when larger temptations come.
In addition to training the body to resist temptation, mortification also can be offered up for the remission of temporal punishment, either for ourselves, for those around us, or for those in Purgatory. We must be ready, like the great saints, to suffer for souls.
Kephans are required to perform at least one mortification per month. Also, every day on retreats, barring Sunday, a mortification is given. And of course any action we find difficult can be offered up, including nursing home visits and Yawns for Christ.
